Hosting a party … and choosing what to serve …

My best friend is home from Georgia.  She is a military wife and her husband is in Iraq again, so she came home to visit for a month.  I’m so happy to see her because she is the only other one of my friends who is actively trying to live a healthy lifestyle.  She has lost over 60 pounds and runs 5 miles everyday.  I am so proud of her!  Anyway, I am throwing her a little party with some of our friends from school.  And there in lies the problem.  Everyone else we are friends with are not into eating healthy.  I mean, the next healthiest person weighs over 200 pounds and has no wish to change it.  I almost feel bad about myself when we all go out, because they pick on me for “wasting away” or “losing too much” or “being too thin”.  Notice I said almost :) . Of course, all this is comming from people who’s idea of an awsome night is standing next to a crockpot of chicken wing dip and eating it until there is no more left and you feel like you are going to puke.  And that’s why I don’t let it get to me.  Don’t get me wrong, I love them all.  Great friends, always there for you.  I just wish I could help in some way.  But, if they don’t want to be helped …. Anyway, I digress, so I am thinking of having a half and half split of food.  Half good and half bad.  For the good I was thinking fruit and pretzels with a no calories chocolate sauce for dipping, some veggies with no calorie salad dressing for dipping, and chicken speedies.  For the bad, meatballs in marinara sauce, chips and dip, and ranch oyster crackers.  I think this will be a good split and hopefully people other than just my best friend and I will have some good stuff :)  Oh yeah, I’m also making jello shots, but they don’t count as food :)  So if anybody has any low cost, easy, and quick ideas for low calorie snacks, please let me know!  I really had to rack my brain for these ideas, so I need all the help I can get.  Thanks …

Linsey I just made some awesome vegies last night. Try taking broccoli and cauliflower (I used frozen) and alternating in on skewers, season with a steak seasoning and salt then spritz it with no calorie butter spray. Cook it on the bar-b-cue or lay them on aluminum foil in the oven (don’t wrap) They actually taste so good your not healthy friends will eat them too. You also could throw a couple pieces of boneless skinless chicken breast on them and no one would even know they were healthy!

Hey girlie…. totally agree with Kelly. This is your party. Only put out the food you’d be happy eating, otherwise on some level you may feel deprived. Also, your friends may even like it. You can make healthy food look unhealthy for them!

Don’t forget, if you are hoasting the party, you get the leftovers….try making leaner versions of the stuff you were thinking….lean beef, or turkey meatballs with a low fat tomato sauce, baked tortilla chips and salsa and low-fat sour cream, I don’t know what ranch oyster crackers are, but how about pita chips with yummy hummus! MMMM I know all my friens who are not trying to lose weight would love these…and never know they were healthier. It may even be a good way to set an example for your friends….show them that healthy food can be yummy!

a really good idea (i did this for my birthday party) is to take a pineapple and cut it in half, leaving the top with the “stem”. then, take meat skewers and make fruit k-bobs. i used grapes, watermelon, pineapple, and strawberries. stick the skewers into the pineapple half and you have a beautiful, healthy, party treat!

I started to comment this morning then got side tracked so now I am back to try again. Unfortunately all the other commenters took my excellent advice! Did I mention every time I see your before and after pictures, not only do I get totally jealous, but VERY MUCH inspired? LOL. Let me know what you come up with for the party, I always love hearing your ideas.

I think be true to yourself most of all. I agree, out out what YOU like. I once made a “pizza” on bisuit dough (the refrig kind) and topped it wih cheese and all kinds of veggies. You do this after you bake the crust. Very good, and only looks fattening! Good luck!
